I cannot express how much I love this series. I originally saw the anime on Funimation and was hooked from episode 1. Unfortunately, the anime ended after only 2 seasons, and so far, there isn't a plan to continue at this point. I couldn't handle that. I HAD to finish the story, and I'm so glad I did. I ended up purchasing and reading the entire 25 volume series in 5 days. I even went as far as ordering the physical manga book of the final volume, even though I bought it on my kindle. It will be worth the extra art work.Kamisama Kiss is about a teenage girl, named Nanami, who seems to be down on her luck, until she meets a stranger who bestows a power on her that will turn her world upside down. The stranger leaves her to sort out this new world of spirits and the supernatural on her own, with the not so willing help of his loyal servant (shinshi), Tomoe. Tomoe is a fox yokai who looks down on humans, and Nanami is no exception. Although she is put off by his attitude, she needs his help when she comes under attack by another yokai. Instead of helping, though, he taunts her until she is forced to create the God-Shinshi contract to get his protection, which must be sealed with a kiss. Much to Tomoe's chagrin, he is now devoted to Nanami in every way, due to the power of the contract, and must educate her in the ways of being a god. Their growing bond, and cast of supporting characters, opens their minds and hearts to the many forms of love and what it can truly mean.Out of all the characters, Tomoe surprised me the most. He's sophisticated, suave, and a bit of a snob, but he's also very sensitive, even though he tries to hide it. His evolution from Nanami's influence and outlook on life is powerful. The feelings of love and compassion that she evokes from him gives his character so much depth.Nanami is a girl that everyone can relate to in terms of insecurities and self-doubt, but as the story progresses, she realizes that love, conviction, and confidence can make her a force to be reckoned with, and her sway on ALL of the characters shows her how strong she truly is.This story gives you all of the feel-goods. Love, laughs, and tears will keep you turning the pages. I don't want to give too much away, so please believe me when I say this series is absolutely worth checking out.I finally found a manga that gives me what I need, all rolled together. I'm such a huge fan of this series that I had to come back to volume 1 and leave a recommendation for it. Its over now (I just got the last book), and it was awesome. I won't spoil the story, but its very romantic, funny, and tear-jerking at times. (This is a total girl manga). Its got gods, demons, fantasy creatures, time-travel, and a deep love that develops in the midst of that and transcends all of it without going over the top (Nanami and Tomoe have disagreements at times like normal couples, and its usually hilarious). Its both a romance and a coming-of-age story for both main characters. Nanami is a highschool girl becoming an adult, and Tomoe is an ageless fox demon who is ~finally~ learning about love and compassion; she's young, bold, hopeful and awkward, and he's ridiculously handsome and capable but also emotionally retarded, and you get to see both of them grow up and fall in love in this series. There were moments when the pieces and hints finally came together, and I just went... kapow! Mind blown! I found the characters to be complex but easy to love (or hate). I got a little teary at the ending, which is happy and mostly ties things up. It leaves the stories of other couples in the series a little open-ended, but comes to a nice close for the main two characters with no major unanswered questions or gaping plot holes. So... five stars. Watch the anime and read the books. Its a good story.
