I've enjoyed all the books up to this one. However, now that the MC is going up constantly against Master classes I find the skills are getting too complicated and fantastical to really relate. Some of the masterclass skills can help in protecting the ship and captain he has hired while they are escaping from pursuing spaceships, but it's not very clear how that works. You've also got bladed weapons now that can grow to a prodigious size. While that's in keeping with Asian myths, it's just getting a little OP for my tastes.I find myself not caring enough to finish this book. And it's the first of this series that I can say that about. It just feels like the story is being pushed because the series is a good seller for the author. I thought a little this way about the last book as well. I feel the books prior to the MC leaving earth were stronger with clearer goals. While the emphasis remains on finding out what the System really is, I find the story getting less focused and compelling to read. Seriously? John sells all his investments and only has enough money to buy a single target crowd control skill and only rank 2 at that and a minor health leach? How is that even believable and dont say that he was conserving credits since he expected to die and was trying to get as much of an edge as he could. And then another thing. In the last book you made a big to do about him having returning daggers made and then never have him use them. And the new spell that takes down the space leviathon should have been useful somewhere...
